Portugal's construction sector is facing rising costs and labor shortages, but innovation is helping to address these challenges. A startup called Havelar, in partnership with FEUP's DIGI@feup group and ICS, has delivered the country's first public 3D-printed building: the ReCircular project in Matosinhos. The 500 m² walls were printed in just six days, with full completion expected within five months.
The multidisciplinary team, consisting of researchers, students, architects, and engineers, utilized AI-driven parametric design, BIM modeling, and sustainable mortars made from recycled materials.
The project aims to streamline construction through automation, reducing waste, time, and labor.
ReCircular will serve as a hub for Matosinhos' e-waste recycling initiative, creating employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
Building on the success of the first 3D-printed house in Vila do Conde, this collaboration showcases how research, technology, and industry can transform the construction sector while promoting sustainability and social impact.
