EDP artificial intelligence transformation and digital innovation

Two years ago, artificial intelligence was mostly an experiment at Energias de Portugal (EDP). Today, it is a core part of daily work.

According to Nelson Pinho, Global Head of Digital & AI, the company's workflow has completely changed, with employees using over 10,000 internal AI agents.

This major shift shows how modern jobs are evolving as companies adopt new technology.

Sharing solutions across teams

To support this growth, EDP holds an annual AI Summit with tech partners like Google, Microsoft, AWS, SAP, and Databricks.

Instead of building tools from scratch, teams use a shared marketplace to find and reuse existing solutions.

This approach helps departments save time and focus on practical results.

Energias de Portugal AI integration and smart grids

Beyond daily productivity—averaging seven AI interactions per employee each day—technology is reshaping core operations.

Field operators now use AI and computer vision to snap photos of equipment errors, check historical work orders, and pull instructions from old manuals.

However, EDP keeps a clear boundary: AI suggests solutions and gathers data, but human operators always make the final decisions, driving progress across energy companies.
