Employees at the Concentrix Braga call center are set to stage a protest this Thursday morning, marching toward Braga City Hall to voice their outrage over a rapid surge in layoffs that has been ongoing since late last year. According to the Call Center Workers’ Union (STCC), more than 100 employees have been dismissed since December.
In a statement, the STCC condemned the mass layoffs, criticizing Concentrix and its subcontracted employment agencies, Randstad and Manpower, for their lack of transparency. The union is demanding clear explanations regarding the company's strategy and the reasoning behind the dismissals.
“Total Uncertainty” for Workers
Speaking to JN, Nuno Geraldes, national leader of STCC, described a tense atmosphere in the workplace, with new layoff lists surfacing every Monday, affecting dozens of employees at a time. He noted that while call center jobs often experience some level of turnover, the current pace is unprecedented.
Geraldes also pointed out that the layoffs seem to be targeting employees who are close to gaining permanent contracts after four years of service. “I’ve worked in call centers for 13 years and have never seen anything like this,” he added.
Currently, Concentrix Braga employs an estimated 700 to 800 workers, though figures remain uncertain due to fluctuating employment levels. The STCC has sought official numbers from the company, but Concentrix has yet to respond to these requests or to formal inquiries from the union.
Protest for Job Security
The demonstration is set to begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, with workers gathering outside the Braga train station, where Concentrix operates, before marching toward City Hall. The goal is to demand accountability and urge the company to provide clarity on its future workforce plans.
Despite attempts to reach Concentrix for comment, JN has not received a response.
