Bernardo Correia: “Years at Google Are Like Dog Years”

Bernardo Correia, the general manager of Google Portugal, talks about his 16 years at Google in a special way. He compares them to “dog years,” meaning you have to multiply them by seven to get the real sense of how long they feel. In a March 2024 episode of the podcast *The CEO is the Limit*, Correia shared how intense his journey has been and what experiences have shaped him along the way.

He has always been interested in technology.

As a kid, he had early access to the internet because a network cable from the National Civil Engineering Lab-where his dad worked-connected directly to his home. This sparked a lifelong love for tech. Even though he was exposed to it early, he chose to study Economics. He started his career at L’Oréal and later at Unilever, working in international management roles in London.

In 2008, he joined Google and has been leading the company in Portugal since 2016.

He believes that being a good leader means having both passion and skill. He says great leaders make room for others to follow their dreams. “I will feel successful,” he says, “when my job is no longer needed.” His career has been about growing and learning, backed by mentors and challenges that pushed him to aim higher, both in his thinking and in his physical abilities.
