AI Consortium Led by Unbabel Has Already Secured €37M from PRR

The Center for Responsible AI, created in 2022 and initially led by Unbabel, has already received €37.75 million in non-refundable grants from Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), out of a total €51.27 million approved. Following Unbabel’s acquisition by US-based TransPerfect, the consortium will appoint a new coordinator in September.

The initiative, involving companies such as Feedzai, Sword Health, Bial, Pestana, Sonae, and VdA, alongside institutions like Instituto Superior Técnico and the Champalimaud Foundation, is tasked with developing 21 AI projects. To date, 20 have been completed, with one still undefined. The consortium also aims to generate 215 high-skilled jobs, over €217 million in exports, and dozens of new master’s and PhD degrees.

Despite criticism over transparency and Unbabel’s exit, the Center became an independent NGO in May 2025 and plans to continue beyond EU funding, with its next event scheduled for November 25 at the Champalimaud Foundation.
