Amkor's €150 Million Investment to Create 350 Jobs in Vila do Conde

Amkor Technology Portugal (ATEP) is set to complete the construction of a new semiconductor industrial unit in Vila do Conde by May, resulting in the creation of 350 jobs and increasing the company's workforce from 850 to 1,200 employees. The €150 million investment, part of a broader €420 million initiative contracted by AICEP, aims to expand production capacity and double the plant's area, adding over 30,000 square meters.

The project, titled "Semiconductor Assembly and Testing – Open Foundry," will focus on innovative production processes, including Wafer Level, Substrate Level, and Panel Level Fan-Out technologies, aligned with Europe's Chips Act goals of reducing dependence on Asia. The expansion is viewed as "strategic" for both the parent company and Europe, according to Vila do Conde's Mayor, Vítor Costa.

This investment follows Amkor’s 2017 acquisition of Nanium, a company born from the bankruptcy of Qimonda. The initiative will receive €18.9 million in incentives, supporting Europe's efforts to strengthen its semiconductor industry. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, who visited the site, highlighted the resilience of the company and expressed confidence that the workforce would soon surpass historical levels.
