The Center for Responsible AI, a consortium led until now by Unbabel, has already completed two of the 21 AI products promised under Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). According to IAPMEI, which oversees the Mobilizing Agendas, the project shows “no deviations from plan” and a 66% financial execution rate — deemed appropriate for this stage.
Funded with €51.27 million in non-refundable grants, the consortium brings together startups, corporations, and academic institutions to build “next-generation AI products.” Nearly €38 million has already been disbursed, with Unbabel, Sword Health, and Priberam among the top beneficiaries.
Following Unbabel’s recent acquisition by US-based TransPerfect, leadership of the consortium will pass to another member, pending IAPMEI approval. Meanwhile, the Center formalized itself as an NGO in May, positioning to continue beyond the PRR. Completion of the Mobilizing Agenda has been extended to June 2026.
