Marco Galinha, president of Bel Group (owner of Diário de Notícias), stressed the importance of data centers for company independence during a panel at the 2nd edition of Conversations with Development, hosted by the Development Bank in Lisbon.
He highlighted that the Bel Group is heavily investing in its own data center, calling it “fundamental for the days ahead” and describing it as the “heart and future” of any resilient SME.
On AI, Galinha explained that “60 to 70% of my decisions are based on Artificial Intelligence algorithms,” noting that AI accelerates problem-solving while creating new opportunities and potential employment gaps.
The businessman also emphasized sustainability as a core principle for European companies and for the Bel Group, which he said integrates ESG into all operations. Founded in 2001, the group was among Portugal’s first to adopt electric and hybrid vehicles and invest in solar energy, focusing on lasting societal value.
Galinha reflected on recent storms that devastated central Portugal, particularly Leiria, praising the recovery efforts of EDP and E-Redes, and offering encouragement to local business owners who endured massive disruptions.
Today, the Bel Group comprises 115 companies and employs nearly 4,000 people, combining innovation, AI, and sustainability as pillars for long-term resilience.
