Bernardo Correia, former Country Director at Google Portugal, is stepping into public service as the new Secretary of State for Digital Transition. His appointment places him at the forefront of Portugal’s AI strategy and broader digital transformation agenda under the Ministry of State Reform.
Correia’s move follows nearly two decades in tech, including 16 years at Google, where he helped drive digital growth for Portuguese businesses. Appointed head of Google Portugal in 2016, he was also active in AmCham, leading its AI and Cybersecurity Committee.
Now, he’ll oversee the National AI Agenda, the National Digital Strategy, and the rollout of Amália, Portugal’s first Portuguese-language large language model. According to Google, his impact on Portugal’s digital ecosystem was “invaluable,” though a replacement for his role at the company has not yet been named.
Correia officially takes office this Friday, stepping from Big Tech into Big Government — with a nation’s digital future on his desk.
