AWS Opens New Cloud Infrastructure in Portugal

Amazon Web Services chosen Portugal as one of three European locations for its new European Sovereign Cloud. The company plans to invest 7.8 billion euros in this project by 2040, alongside sites in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Why AWS Chose Portugal

Local companies needed secure cloud services inside the country. AWS builds most of its infrastructure based on direct customer requests, making local demand the main reason for this launch.

Geography and energy access also played a big role. Portugal sits right between Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Eleven undersea internet cables connect the country to five continents, making it a major hub for global data traffic.

Ready for AI

Portugal has a strong power grid and fast fiber internet connections. This combination makes it an ideal spot to handle heavy data processing for artificial intelligence projects.
